About this reference

This directory includes 161 fields: 129 entries marked as Exif 3.1 in ExifTool’s EXIF table and 32 entries from its GPS table, as checked on October 28, 2026. Names and format labels follow ExifTool. Vendor-specific MakerNotes, broader TIFF/DNG fields, and every XMP namespace are outside this list.

Tag IDs are hexadecimal and meaningful within a group. Format labels describe ExifTool’s documented writable representation, not a guarantee of how every file encodes the field. “Not writable” indicates that the reference does not offer a writable format for that block.

Reading the format labels

undefA byte sequence whose meaning depends on the tag

Directory pointerAn offset leading to another group of fields

The value often needs context. Latitude and longitude need their north/south and east/west reference tags. A capture time may need a separate time-zone offset. MakerNoteUnknown represents a manufacturer-specific block, whose internal fields depend on the device.

Beyond EXIF

XMP, IPTC, color profiles, comments, previews, and sidecar files can carry additional information. Photo-library databases and file-system properties are separate from embedded tags.
