Separate the file, the library, and the share
A location can exist inside the original image, as a library edit, or as information included with a shared item. A change at one layer does not establish what happened at the others. Always inspect the particular downloaded or exported copy you will send.
What the documented controls do
| Task | Apple Photos | Google Photos |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect location | The information panel can show a map | The item’s information can show a camera, added, or estimated location |
| Change location | Offers an Adjust Location control, including No Location | Allows edits to added or estimated locations; camera-recorded locations cannot be removed through that control |
| Control a share | The share Options panel can exclude Location | Location sharing depends on the sharing method and settings |
| Transfer originals | All Photos Data can include originals, edits, and metadata in AirDrop shares | A downloaded original can still expose camera GPS regardless of library location edits |
| Remove all embedded metadata | Location controls do not promise this | Location controls do not promise this |

Check the file that leaves the app
These are distinctions between documented controls, not a claim about every sharing destination or software release. Neither app’s location switch should be described as an all-metadata eraser.
- Choose the share or export settings appropriate to your goal.
- Save the resulting file locally and inspect its metadata.
- If you need a copy without source metadata, clean that file and review the output.
- Share the clean copy rather than returning to an original-file share.
